Scarlet Miller (Kristie McKamie) is an in-demand veterinarian who speaks French and is a single mother in New York City. She works at the Uptown Animal Clinic where her assistant David (Teeshay) guides her to dogs and cats with very demanding eccentric owners. Scarlet is anxious to leave the clinic to start her vacation. She needs to collect son and get to their train to Vermont in the next 90 minutes. Scarlet is finally able to finish up and give David a Christmas hug as she leaves the clinic.On her way to pick up her son, Scarlet stops at a cheese artisan shop, picks up a gift she had ordered and make a couple of purchases for the train ride. She gives the gift package to Milo's teacher and hurry off to the train stationScarlet and her son Milo (Pono Say) arrive in a Vermont train station where her father Dr. Mitch Miller (Michael Swan) waist for them on a bench. Milo wants to order sushi for dinner, but his grandfather says there is no delivery or sushi on his town. Mitch explains that spaghetti and meatballs await them at home. Scarlet's father suggests they stop for decorations and a tree on the way home as they have not celebrated Christmas in Vermont in a number of years. When they stop at the general store, they learn it has been sold out of Christmas decorations for weeks.At her father's home, Scarlet, Milo and Dr. Miller dine on his legendary spaghetti and meatballs. Mitch explains that since Dr. Ross retired, he is the only veterinarian around for 50 miles. The telephone rings and Dr. Miller is summoned to deliver a baby heifer. Miller challenges his daughter to take the call while he and Milo bake Christmas cookies. A short time later, Scarlet appears in oversize coveralls.Scarlet is pacing in the barnyard in pink coveralls that she brought from New York and is extremely nervous about her assignment but helps birth a baby calf. Later, Scarlet is proud of her accomplishment and calls her father to report in. On her way home, Scarlet stops by the convenience store and bumps into a handsome man who is Mitch's friend. They argue over the last box of Frosted Flakes. The man tells Scarlet he is tired from working a full day and evening shift as a doctor. Scarlet tells the stranger she is a doctor too and tells the man about a surgery and calf birth she experienced that day. They briefly compare resumes before Scarlet relinquished the box of cereal as an unhealthy selection and leaves.Scarlet learns from her father that the handsome doctors name is Josh Foster (Jonathan Stoddard). Dr. Miller sends his daughter to work at an animal adoption event while he and Milo head to do a wellness check on a Clydesdale. Scarlet's father hints that he may want to retire and offers Scarlet the opportunity to work alongside him and take over the practice one day. Scarlet counters with an offer for Her father to move to New York, live with her and Milo, and work in her clinic part time. At the adoption event, Scarlet is impressed with an older dog named Banjo who seems ignored by the families that are looking to adopt puppies. She snaps a photo. Josh Foster appears and makes a similar comment about Banjo and snap judgments. Josh and Scarlet have a proper introduction. As Josh leaves, a tall attractive woman flirts with Josh of which Scarlet takes note.Back at home, Scarlet shows Milo the photo she took of Banjo. Milo immediately wants to adopt him. Dr. Mitch Miller gets another call to help an animal in need. He sends his daughter to drive through freezing rain to Josh Foster's house to service the dog he just adopted. Scarlet is surprised to see Banjo as the dog that Josh adopted. His dog is lethargic and has a tender belly. Scarlet discovers Milo is ill from eating cake icing accidentally from the Yule cake logs Josh is preparing for his staff.Meanwhile, at Dr. Miller's house, Milo's grandfather proposes taking Milo on house calls to learn about being a veterinarian. Milo is concerned he has not yet gotten his mother a Christmas present. His grandfather offer to help Milo make something for her together. They start on building a picture frame with some imperfections that Dr. Miller labels as character.Scarlet gets stuck at Josh's house because of the storm, so they drink coffee and wait it out. Scarlet talks about her son Milo who Josh recognizes was named after a story book character. She reveals that she lost husband eight years ago around Christmas. Scarlet did not want to give up her New York life and eventually figured out the subway trains with her son.Milo and his grandfather go through some old Christmas photos suitable for the picture frame. They find a photo of Scarlet with her cat Josie, a photo recalling how Dr. Miller and his daughter cured a horse of colic on Christmas Eve and a photo of Milo with his mother and father. Milo selects a photo that includes his grandfather who says if Scarlet and Milo were with him, it would be like Christmas every day.Scarlet and Josh decorate Buche de Noel for the veterans' home and talk about New York City to kill even more time during the storm. Scarlet learns that Josh is originally from New York City., and they have a lot of experiences they both relate to. Scarlet extolls the need to find your inner tourist and take advantage of all the Christmas decorations and events that New York offers. When Josh's meringues are finished in the oven, the storm has subsided and Banjo has recovered which signal to Scarlet it is time to leave. They agree to interact on a first name basis and Josh collects Scarlet's phone number. Scarlet samples one of the meringues but seems less than delighted. In the car, Scarlet receives a call from David back at the office asking for advice on a cat. David learns she has spent the evening in the company of a young man making cakes and waiting out a storm.The next morning Scarlet come down the stairs when Milo and his grandfather are decorating the tree they cut down with old ornaments they found stored on the property. Scarlet tells them about her evening with Josh and Banjo. Seconds later, Josh is at the door with Banjo. He invites the Miller family to watch "Miracle on 34th Street" in theater Josh set up in the barn. They eat parmesan popcorn watching the film on a big screen with an old style film projector playing the movie. Scarlet is impressed with the popcorn and Josh who shares his secret family recipe for the treat. Josh and Scarlet flirt throughout the movie. Milo tells Josh that he likes seeing Santa at Macy's and his mother's favorite activity is ice skating at Rockefeller Center. As they leave the barn, they all see a reindeer in the distance. Josh has to go to work and Dr. Miller sends his daughter to vaccinate a herd of horses at Maisie Phillips place. Scarlet is leaving the Phillips place when David calls to ask if they would do tooth whitening on a dog. Scarlet declines but then invite David up to Vermont for a few days to help out. David loves a radical change of plans.Scarlet arrives home as Milo is stamping gifts with the potato stamps that he and his grandfather made. Mitch tells Scarlet they used a scalpel safely to make precise designs. Just then, Josh calls and invites the Miller's to a local production of the Nutcracker. Mitch has a previously scheduled vet call and Milo thinks the production is boring. Scarlet however accepts the invitation for her and Milo and convinces Milo you have to try things a couple of times to know if you like them. She asks Milo to have an open mind and that they should be appreciative they found such a good new friend.Josh meets Scarlet and Milo at the theater. Instead of watching the show, children are immediately cast into the show. Milo chooses to be a mouse king soldier and is taken away to get ears and cheese. The woman tells Josh and Scarlet that they can enjoy a child free date together.As they are seated in the theater, two people wedge into adjoining seats so that Josh and Scarlet cannot sit together. A comical version of The Nutcracker in which Milo gets to throw cheese as the Nutcracker battles the mouse king. Milo enjoys his participation and Scarlet is pleased with the show and all the fun Milo got to enjoy.Outside the theater, Josh excuses himself to greet another woman he recognizes. Milo appears and introduces Scarlet to his new friend Vivian (Charlee Kliethermes) who served in the mouse army with him. Milo explains his fast friendship is just like the feeling his mother Scarlet had about Josh. Josh overhears and Scarlet is a bit embarrassed. Josh changes the focus by suggesting they take a selfie together. The plays producer appears and congratulates Vivian and Milo on their performance. Scarlet introduces herself and the producer tells Scarlet she is Alice Barstow (Amie Dasher) and they had biology in high school together. Alice invites Josh and Scarlet to make a play date for the kids. Scarlet is forced to reveal that she does not live in Vermont and she and Josh are just friends. Josh tells Milo he heard a rumor that Santa Claus is making an appearance the next day. Scarlet reveals that her friend David is coming to town the next day. Milo blurts out that David is much more than a friend to his mother. Scarlet and Milo leave and Josh remains standing there and a bit confused.The next morning Scarlet takes Milo and Vivian to Dr. Foster's office to meet Santa. Josh is leading a patient named Mrs. Bix (Theresa Lang) out who is quizzing the doctor about his love life. When she sees Scarlet waiting for Dr. Foster, Mrs. Bix says Scarlet would be an ideal candidate for his girlfriend vacancy. Josh tells Scarlet that Santa has not yet arrived and rushes off to change clothes. When Santa appears, Vivian and Milo immediately recognize him as Josh. Josh tells them he is standing in for Santa and employs Vivian and Milo as elves to help him pass out cookies at the Christmas party in the community space next door.As Mrs. Bix sings Christmas carols, Santa distributes gifts to the people gathered. At the end of the party, Josh asks Scarlet to join him late night on Christmas Eve after she has put Milo to bed. She agrees to meet Josh. Just then David appears. Alice appears to pick up Vivian. When she sees Josh, she reminds him about their dinner at Abigail's that night. Alice tells Scarlet that Abigail has a crush on Josh, just like all the other women in town.Scarlet complains to David that Alice would pass on a message from Josh's hot date right in front of her. Still, Scarlet will not admit that she is into Josh. David says he can see with his own eyes that Scarlet and Josh enjoy a mutual affection for each other. Scarlet says that even if that were true, they live 300 miles apart. David repeats three words Scarlet tells him often when he schedules appointments at the animal clinic: "Make it work."On Christmas Eve Night, Josh and Scarlet are walking on a lighted path through the woods. Scarlet recalls decorating all the "princess pine trees" (the small and cute ones) so the woodland creatures could celebrate Christmas. To give Scarlet another taste of her New York Christmas, Josh recreates Rockefeller Center for her at a pavilion in the park. They go roller skating even though both admit to being poor skaters. As they skate, Scarlet tells how she dedicated herself to getting into college and leaving Vermont, while Josh says he cannot imagine living anywhere else after leaving New York and finding the clean air that even tastes good. As they are about to kiss, Scarlet backs off saying she cannot just be another girl in Josh's fan club. Josh says all the women in town are just his patients. Josh tells Scarlet that she should move home to be with him. Scarlet is offended and defends her decision to be in New York with Milo and has worked hard building her successful life there. She does not want to give everything up for a feeling.When Scarlet arrives home from her date, Dr. Mitch Miller is tending to an injured goat named Sophie. Scarlet helps her father stitch up the goat's leg. After they are finished, Scarlet excuses herself to check on Milo. Milo is in bed but still awake anticipating Christmas. He intimates to Scarlet that he does not want to go back to New York after Christmas. While Milo enjoyed the vacation, its the people he met that make him want to stay, especially Josh.Scarlet chats with her father in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace. He tells her that she does not have to do everything alone. He assures her that she has created a great life for her and Milo, but she should let others in. Allowing others to help on no surrender to the strength and independence she has gained. In her room, Scarlet finds the family photos and picture frame that Milo made her for Christmas.On Christmas Eve morning, Scarlet comes down for breakfast and asks her father to watch Milo so she can create some Christmas miracles. She searches for Josh but first finds him when she returns home, putting paper cranes on a tree outside of the Miller's home. Josh apologizes for being presumptuous and tells Scarlet all he wants is for her dreams to come true and that she be his home wherever that is. They kiss but are interrupted by meowing. Scarlet has a box with a kitten in it to deliver.They enter the home together. Scarlet tells her family that she is ready to leave New York and come home to Vermont. Her father tears up and then leaves with Milo and the kitten go to call Vivian to tell her the good news. David follows behind leaving Josh and Scarlet alone momentarily. Josh invites Scarlet to meet his family in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Josh and Scarlet kiss, and then everyone hugs and celebrates being together for the holidays
