Slim (Stephen Dorff), Frank (Steven McCarthy), Otis (Cle Bennett), and Alex (Karen Cliche) are a group of youthful bank robbers who commit their crimes anonymously and in innovative ways involving extreme sports such as skating and snowboarding. Post the heist the gang incinerate their equipment in a hospital basement furnace used to dispose medical waste. Slim is an insurance agent by day. Their first robbing a bank nets then $300,000. Slim distributes $50,000 each and keeps $100,000 as stake money for their next job. On their 2nd job, they rob an armored car transferring cash from a bank. The police chase them and corner them next to the harbor, but Slim drives the armored car into the water and escapes with the cash. This job nets them $2.6 million. Following an unexpected windfall on only their 2nd job, the gang nets $20 million in untraceable bonds. The group evades capture from the police, led by "hardboiled cop" Lieutenant Macgruder (Bruce Payne), but an anonymous individual seems to know who they are and threatens to inform the police unless they undertake a robbery for him. The individual wants them to steal a delivery of high denomination banknotes that is headed for destruction. The person puts his liaison named Jerry on the team, to give them relevant instructions and to take delivery of the notes. The individual's knowledge of the gang drives tensions between Slim, Otis and Alex. Otis and Alex want out, while Frank has a bad feeling about the heist. The gang pulls off the heist on top of a tall bridge and get the cash from the armored cash. But Jerry shoots the guard inside the armored car, and in the shootout, Alex is hit. The plan was to have a getaway car, but Slim changed the plan to parachute off the bridge instead. Jerry is left behind to deal with the incoming police, and he is hit by the cop car and bumped off the bridge, without a chute. Gang delivers the money to the drop-off point, but Alex dies. The individual, who is revealed to be Macgruder, calls Slim and lies that the heist yielded no cash and only federal paperwork. Macgruder wants the gang to pull a last heist. Now, Slim was trying to sell the bonds through a brokerage and figured that they needed just 2 more days till they could call quits and move out. Enter the Mob, represented by underworld enforcer Surtayne (Steven Berkoff). The bonds belonged to the mob and Surtayne had his men observing the brokerage if anyone tried to move $20 million worth of bonds. Surtayne contacts the broker Roy Hamilton, to get contact for Slim, who was the seller of the bonds. Surtayne confronts Slim at the gang hideout. Surtayne instructs the group to return the bonds by the coming Monday.Slim becomes romantically involved with Karen (Natasha Henstridge), a police detective who distrusts Macgruder. Karen had recognized Slim as part of the gang, from a tattoo on his neck, which was visible from a CCTV footage of the bridge. Macgruder calls Slim and informs him that the next cash delivery is Monday morning 10 am in front of the SDLM bank. Turns out Slim had put a camera at the cash drop off point and he finds that Macgruder picked up the cash. He is the anonymous individual.Karen confronts Slim and says that she knows he is the mastermind of the heists, but Slim is confident that all the evidence against him is circumstantial. He asks Karen to look at Macgruder instead. Surtayne finds Slim looking at SDLM bank on Sunday, and now wants $5 million in addition to the bonds. Karen goes with her information to Macgruder and tells him to investigate Slim. To save Karen and his friends escape from the threat of the anonymous man and the Mob, Slim concocts a daring robbery. The gang loots Macgruder of his booty first (Otis breaks into Macgruber's office as a cleaning man and cleans out his locker, which had the stolen loot). Macgruder discovers this and sets them up outside SDLM bank & orders shoot on sight. The gang doesn't hit the set up armored van, instead it hits a different bank altogether and escape in their getaway van. They go to the mob contact Surtayne & trap him in a seat in their van with a weight triggered military mine & escape. The cops trace the van, but it blows right in front of them. The gang plants the money on Macgruder & he gets caught. Karen traces the gang to a commercial flight to Rio, but they use a chartered flight to get away.
